DURHAM BALLET THEATRE

Rehearsals

Rehearsal Attire

  • Dance wear should be fitted to the body, what you would wear in a training class is most appropriate. ** At no time should a flesh colored leotard be worn to a rehearsal. ** Performers should wear clothing over their dance wear. No performer should be in the parking lot wearing just a leotard.

  • No loose T-shirts, pants or other garments that could catch onto other dancers’ or partners’ hands or the silks. We must be able to see the line of your body and correct execution of the choreography.

  • Be aware of personal hygiene. If you tend to perspire heavily, please bring an extra leotard or T-shirt and extra deodorant for the comfort of the other dancers and yourself.

  • No perfume & cologne, scented lotions or body spray should be limited and have mild scent

  • Pointe shoes and/or ballet shoes must support the dancer. Unless otherwise informed, all pointe shoes and ballet shoes should match the dancer's skin tone.

  • No jewelry, rings, snaps or zippers.

  • Hair should be secured away from the face (no ponytails). This includes ALL performers. If a performer’s hair has not been secure, they will be sold a hair band and we will invoice for it.

Rehearsal Expectation

  • The rehearsal space is not a place to hang out or bring additional family members. If you are NOT scheduled for rehearsal or volunteering your time please don’t plan to hang-out.

  • Rehearsal space should be cleaner when you leave than it was when you arrived.

  • Honor rehearsal time and space. We will honor your time and ours by doing our best to keep rehearsals on time. If dancers are consistently late, they may be removed from the piece for which they are repeatedly late to rehearsal. If rehearsals run late or if rehearsals end earlier than expected families of children under 10 will be notified via the Parent WhatsApp (mentioned above). Other performers will have access to the phone to contact parents/guardians. Young performers will be supervised until they are picked up.

  • Dancers must have transportation. Not having arranged a ride is not a reason to miss a scheduled rehearsal.  Drivers: Plan ahead and help your cast member get to rehearsals, costume fittings, and the performance call early enough to warm up and get settled.

  • Dance and Aerial Junior and Senior Corps members must warm themselves up at least 30 minutes before rehearsal or attend a warm-up class. Children’s corps should arrive at least 15 minutes before rehearsal in order to get settled, use the bathroom and change shoes

  • Rehearsal spaces will be curtained to maintain the element of surprise for the performance. Please do not ask to photograph or video your cast member in rehearsal. We will have videos made specifically for performer access only so they may continue learning and practicing choreography during the week.

What to Bring to Rehearsal

  • Dance bag

  • Dance Shoes (dance shoes should NOT be worn outside)

  • Extra hair ties pins, etc.

  • Water bottle

  • Healthy snacks; refrigerator is available

  • Homework

  • Non-messy/staining activities for children (sticker books, crayons, search-and-find)

Electronics, including phones, are prohibited from rehearsals; they are extremely distracting for cast members who need to be watching and listening for their cues.
